Insect Lucilia sericata is observed frequenting corpses in the greatest number,
arriving the first and laying its eggs during fall, summer and spring.
Calliphora vicina species was the first to arrive in winter.
Arthropods were mainly attracted to mouth, neck an head. Mouth is the part in which
larvae development is more successful.
Calliphora larvae were responsible for most of the carcass removal, although the
presence of necrophagous adult flies on the carrion do not guarantee that larvae will
hatch and survive.
The most adaptable species to the natural conditions of the place are the ones arriving
first at corpse and laying eggs. The success of development of the others ones could be
delayed by non suitable climatic factors. When this happens, it is likely the corpse would
be full of eggs and maggots of species arriving first. They will compete for their own
survival.
The species which could be considered as forensic
indicators are the following ones:
Chrysomya albiceps: summer and fall; taking into
account that Lucilia sericata has initially produced, at least a generation.
Lucilia sericata is the dominant specie during the spring.
Calliphora vicina is the main consumer of corpses during winter.
